About the Event
"High-energy neutrinos as cosmic messengers" presented by Luciana Andrade Dourado, Gran Sasso Science Institute, L’Aquila; Chaired by Dr. Denise Boncioli, UNIVAQ, DSFC
To study the objects and phenomena of the universe, astrophysicists require observations of several cosmic messengers, such as cosmic rays, electromagnetic radiation, gravitational waves, and neutrinos. Produced by extremely energetic phenomena, high-energy neutrinos are particularly interesting particles, especially due to their property of low interaction with matter and radiation fields, which helps astrophysicists obtain more direct information about their origin. On the other hand, this characteristic is also what makes them challenging to observe and necessitates the use of large volumes of material for their detection. Therefore, in this seminar, I will provide an overview of these particles, elucidate how high-energy neutrino observatories work, and present some recent results from current observatories.
