About the Event
"Tolkien's conception of time and relationship with the primary world" presented by Dr. Fabio Convenga, University of L'Aquila; Chaired by Dr. Denise Boncioli, DSFC, University of L'Aquila
The figure of J.R.R. Tolkien occupies a prominent place in 20th-century literature. Through his most famous works, 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit', Tolkien not only created an imaginary world of unparalleled richness — Middle-earth — but also set a new standard for the fantasy genre, influencing countless subsequent authors and works. In Tolkien's Legendarium, the concept of time is not merely an inert backdrop but a philosophical foundation that underpins his fictional universe. Men, elves, dwarves, and other creatures are all deeply influenced by time, and many of their adventures that propel the narrative forward are the result of their interactions with it. In this talk, we will explore Tolkien's conception of time and its profound impact on his storytelling, with an incursion into the concepts of time that we developed in the real world.
