About the Event
"Osteoclast heterogeneity in human aging and disease, Impacts on Clinical Care" presented by Professor Kent Søe – Department of Clinical Research, Odense University Hospital; Chaired by Luca Giacchi, UNIVAQ, DISCAB
Professor Søe and his research team specialize in investigating the heterogeneity of osteoclasts, both derived from the blood of various human donors and within the donor's or patient's body. This will be the central focus of the presentation. Professor Søe will present that osteoclast behavior in the lab varies according to donor characteristics, including smoking habits. This variability in behavior may stem from epigenetic modifications of leukocytes. Furthermore, drug treatments administered to patients can induce changes in the behavior of their osteoclasts in laboratory settings. Lastly, genetic variations associated with osteoclasts may render cancer patients less responsive to treatments like zoledronic acid. It is the aim of Professor Søe to implement changes in clinical practice based on these and future discoveries.
