About the Event
"Sustainable sources of protein for global food demand: Towards a zero-hunger world" presented by Dr. Milad Hadidi, University of Vienna, Austria; Chaired by Dr. Reza Yadollahvand, UNIVAQ, DISCAB
According to the United Nations’ projections, the global population is estimated to rise to approximately 9.7 billion by 2050. This rise is creating a pressing demand for the production of protein-rich foods for human consumption that are affordable, abundant, nutritious, and sustainable. The livestock industry has been a significant source of high-quality proteins for nearly 50 years. However, it is also responsible for a range of detrimental environmental impacts, including increased deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, land use, and loss of biodiversity. As a result, there is growing interest in the development of sustainable plant-based alternatives to replace animal-derived food sources in the human diet. Today we evaluate the potential of plant proteins to meet global dietary protein requirements.
