The molecular mechanisms underlying the Kok-Joliot cycle of oxygenic photosynthesis, especially the characterization of the pivotal S4 state where oxygen evolution occurs, have remained a longstanding mystery for decades. Using computational methods, our studies uncover the detailed mechanisms and slowest step of this essential biological process, supporting advanced spectroscopy data and contributing significantly to our understanding of photosynthesis and the design of artificial water-splitting systems.
